Determining the truth can be an arduous process. Sports fans may argue the play at the plate or whether the point guard released the last-second shot in time. Religious people may debate the one true faith. Eyewitnesses to a crime may give honest but conflicting accounts of what happened.
Determining a lie poses no similar difficulty. Once deceit has been exposed, we all know what it is—whether we care to admit it or not.
CHAPTER 5
SOME CULTURES ARE MORE
EQUAL THAN OTHERS
IN THE LATE 1980s, Jesse Jackson led hundreds of Stanford University students in a protest of the school's required “Western Culture” course. That such an exclusionary class was required, demonstrators claimed, constituted institutional racism within Stanford. In the place of a course on Western civilization, the activists demanded a “multicultural” course, teaching students about cultures outside our own. The protestors famously chanted, “Hey hey, ho ho / Western culture's got to go.” University administrators agreed. Stanford, as many other schools would soon do, abandoned the course on the West and replaced it with a mandated class on multiculturalism.1 The mob's angry chant not only questioned the value of Western civilization but also seemed to suggest that westerners have neglected the study of external cultures for too long. On the charge of ignorance of foreign cultures, most Americans are certainly guilty. This is especially true of the vast majority issuing such charges.
